Week 14 Reading Diary: Jataka Tales by Francis and Thomas Part C

I read Part C of Jataka Tales by Francis and Thomas. I found the story of The Three Fishes to be particularly interesting. I had to really think about the story to be honest. The story began about three fish that were described as Very thoughtful, Thoughtless, and Duly thoughtful. I would think that the very thoughtful fish would be what you would want to be right? But, the Duly thoughtful fish was the one that saved the day. I could also be interpreting this in the completely opposite way as what I am supposed to. But anyway, the story goes that the Duly thoughtful fish tells the other to fish that they need to leave because the area where they were was very dangerous because there were a lot of fishermen in that area. The other two fish were so lazy that they just stayed until one day the Very thoughtful fish and the Thoughtless fish swam into a fisherman’s net. The Duly thoughtful fish saved them by acting like a fish that broke out of the net. They were all able to escape because of the Duly thoughtful and the other two fish owed their lives to him.

Week 14 Famous Last Words

Going into this Marathon, I knew I wouldn't PR. I knew it was going to be hard and miserable, but I think it honestly was my favorite race yet. I really just did some hard examining of the heart, and I came out with true thankfulness. I have an awesome mother that taught me how to be independent and never told me a dream wasn't realistic. I have the biggest cheerleader for a sister that I am more proud of than she will ever know. A role model that I have had in my life ever since I could remember that showed me doing things on your own is not only empowering but makes you a strong person. I think that is important, and everyone should have a Chanda in their life. I have a Bickel and Cheryl that treat me like a granddaughter and will take care of me as such. I have the greatest group of friends a girl could ask for. I have a Jasmine that made the best signs and has the sweetest soul, a Mikaela that is always up for any adventure and is absolutely hilarious, a Rhett that has a heart of gold, and the absolute best boyfriend in the ENTIRE world. I also have a Kristen and a Jill that got me an awesome shirt that I got to wear during the race, that was seriously so special to me for them to even think of me. What made this race my favorite yet was I got the opportunity to celebrate in my friends successes, and that seriously was better than any PR any day. My friend Emmily completed her first marathon. It made me tear up a little bit getting to see her with that medal around her neck. Her story isn't mine to tell, but she is the most determined person I have ever met. My friend Sydney also completed her first marathon. She completely kicked booty and is super fast! Kristen and Lauren completed their first half, and I could not be more giddy for them. We got to see them at mile 7 and that was my favorite moment during the race! I am so beyond blessed with the best!

Week 14 Reading Diary: Jataka Tales by Francis and Thomas

I read Part 2 of the Jataka Tales by Francis and Thomas. The story of The Grateful Animals was definitely interesting. A really mean prince got thrown into a raging river by his servants. A rat, a parrot, a hermit, and a snake saved him. The rat and the snake were people that really loved riches and buried money under the ground in their past lives. While saving the prince, the rat, the parrot, and the snake all became in really bad shape and needed to be taken care of. The hermit nursed back all of them including the prince. He tended to the animals first before the prince because they were the smallest and the most vulnerable. The snake, the parrot, and the rat were all so appreciative and told the hermit he could have their treasure except the parrot. He offered rice. The prince eventually became king and was going to have the hermit killed until he told the villagers what happened. They were outraged and killed the king. The hermit became king and all was well in the land.

Week 13 Storytelling: Beauty and Brownie's Test

There once was a clan of deer. This clan was quite large with Father being the leader. Father and Mother had two fawns. Their names were Beauty and Brownie. Beauty and Brownie were in charge of their own herds within the clan.

One day, Father told Beauty and Brownie to take their herds out of the forest because it was not safe for them to stay there.

“But I do not want to leave!” Shouted Brownie.

“I am sorry, but you must,” stated Mother.

“Why must we leave Father?” Beauty asked.

“There is great danger at these times. Hunters are after us, and we cannot all stay here,” said Father.

“Come with us!” Brownie and Beauty urged.

“We are too old to make the travel,” Father said.

“You must take your herds and leave. Travel by night, watch for hunters, and always go around the villages,” Mother said concerned.

So, Brownie and Beauty gathered their herds and left when it turned dark.

Brownie and Beauty split up with their herds. Beauty thought that it would be too dangerous having all of the deer together, and that it would slow the whole group down if everyone traveled together. Brownie was nervous being away from his whole family. He was not as smart as Beauty was.

Beauty listened to what their parents told her and she traveled at night. She made sure to never go through any of the villages. She always led her herd around them. She made sure to never fall into any of the hunter’s traps, and she always made sure to point out to the herd where a trap was. She was a wonderful leader. Beauty was patient, kind, and caring towards her herd. She made sure to always take car of her herd whatever they may need.

Brownie on the other hand, he forgot what his parents told him. He took his herd out in the middle of the day when all the villagers were outside. He always went through all of the villages and did not go around the villages like Mother told him. The consequences of this were horrendous. His herd was quickly diminishing. Brownie did not really seem to mind. He was just concerned with making sure he was well fed and safe. He knew that as long as there was someone slower than him in his herd that he would be okay.

Eventually, it was safe enough to come home, so Beauty came home with her entire herd. Not one of the deer in her herd was ever harmed through the dangerous time. Mother and Father were so pleased!

A few of Brownie’s herd trickled in, but Brownie was not to be seen. Mother asked a few members of his herd about this, and they simply said, “We do not know. One day we just woke up and he was gone!”

Brownie was never to be seen again…

Author's Note: After writing all the stories in my portfolio, it was nice to be able to just do a little fun story like this one! This story was from More Jataka Tales by Babbitt called Beauty and Brownie. The Jataka Tales are quite fun to read, and mostly all have a great lesson that comes with it. I followed the original story almost exactly except that the father was the one that told them to travel at night and gave them all the advice not the mother. I also added some dialogue and added some more knowledge about the characters. I had a lot of questions reading the original story, so I wanted to make this story less vague. For instance, I added more dialogue to give more personality to the characters. I also added that Beauty is very smart and kind, and Brownie is dumb and selfish.

Week 13 Reading Diary: Jataka Tales by Francis and Thomas

I am reading Jataka Tales by Francis and Thomas. I think I am starting to get obsessed with these Jataka Tales. We only have a few weeks left in the semester, but I am starting another one! They are just so good! One thing I have noticed about most of the Jataka Tales, they all seem to have some sort of advice or wisdom being told. It is always so clever and creative. One story that stood out to me in my readings today was the Haughty Slave. This man that had a wife and a son decided to hide his money because he did not trust his wife with it. He wanted to make sure it fell into his son’s hands after he died. He buried the money and only him and his servant knew where it was. So, when the man died his mother told his the son to take the servant and go find the money. The boy did just that, but the servant would take him to the spot and then not tell him. He did this several times before he sought advice from his father’s old friend. The old friend told him to dig where the servant takes him out everyday. There, he will find his father’s money. So, the son did just that and found the money!

Week 13 Reading Diary: More Jataka Tales by Babbitt

am really enjoying getting to read more Jataka Tales! They are just so much fun for me! I read More Jataka Tales by Babbitt (Part B). The story of Beauty and Brownie really stuck out to me. Beauty and Brownie were leaders of the Deer and their father told them to take their herds and go away, but travel by night so they will not get caught. They had to go away because there was not enough food for all of them, and their mother and father were afraid that they would get trapped in the traps that the hunters set out for them. Beauty did what their father asked, always traveled by night and was very safe. None of the herd was harmed. However, Brownie forgot and traveled during the day. They went through villages during the day time, and after it was all done only a few survived from the herd. This was such a good story and a good life lesson. When one of our elders tells us something we should listen carefully and follow through because they tell us what to do for a good reason!
